Birth Doula
What does a doula DO anyway?
Getting ready to give birth can be confusing! There are so many decisions to make, and so many opinions about all of it! You know what helps? Having someone who is there for you! You deserve someone who can direct you to resources you need to make informed decisions about one of the most important events in your life! You deserve someone to remind you that you don't always have to take all of this so seriously, someone to help you celebrate, and enjoy yourself! And when the going gets tough, you deserve someone with the tools, techniques, and training to help you keep going. Someone you trust to look you in the eye, and remind you, "Yes, this is normal. Yes! You can do this!"
I don't answer to your care providers, your insurance company, or your parents: I answer to you! In our two prenatal meetings, we'll talk about all the decisions you can make to ensure your birth is what you want it to be. We'll discuss and devise a plan for supporting you emotionally and physically during your birth. Whether you want intense physical support to avoid medical pain relief and other interventions, help planning how to make your epidural as effective as possible, or advice on preparing for your scheduled cesarean, your preferences will be trusted and honored every step of the way.
With perspective, and support, birth can be fun! And it should be! You deserve it. And I happen to know you're going to rock this thing. ;-)
What about my support team, friends, and family? Do I need a doula if I have them?
How will you serve my whole team?
Your support team (partner(s), family, friends, whoever!) will always have someone to turn to if they're unsure of what's going on or how to help you, or are feeling anxious about the process. With me there to offer suggestions and guidance as needed, the emotional bond you share with your loved ones will be combined with proven labor support techniques. If you have pets in your family, and have questions or concerns about managing the transition of adding a new baby, know a little forethought and planning can go a long way toward an optimal outcome, and it's a passion of mine to help you make this transition as easy, and fun for your pets as possible, too. I recommend making this discussion a part of our prenatal and postnatal visits.
You can learn more about the history of doulas, and their role in birth by watching this video from my certifying body, DONA International (CW: a lot of gendered language around birthing people. DONA has come a long way, but this is an old video. I proudly support and affirm birthing people of all genders, presentations, orientations, and relationship structures).

Postpartum Doula
Ok, I'll bite. What does a postpartum doula do?
Having a doula by your side in the weeks leading up to, and during your birth is great! But you may find letting your doula walk out the door never to return just when you're saddled with a tiny person with huge needs is a bit of a bummer. Never fear! I can be your postpartum doula, too! As a postpartum doula , I join you in your home for 4-hour shifts one to five days a week to support you in your transition to parenthood. This can look like...
~Talking with you about your experiences with birth and early parenthood and helping you process them
~Holding and soothing your baby so you can take a nap or shower
~Grocery shopping, and cooking you a nourishing meal, and prepping snacks for when you've only got one hand to eat
~Providing a listening ear and evidence-based resources to help you work out how you want to parent your baby
~Brainstorming solutions to your postpartum struggles, from a place of experience and expertise
~Doing light housekeeping, such as putting in a load of laundry, washing dishes, or pet care
~Going with you and baby to appointments or errands
~And, of course, keeping your spirits up with warmth and humor to help you stay focused on the joy of this precious time, while acknowledging and validating your struggles with the tougher parts
Being a new parent is kind of like being a doula: it's all about being flexible and thinking on your feet. We'll work together to tailor each session to your family's unique needs that day.
Intrigued? Scared to commit? Ok. Before I make you commit to four shifts at a time, you can book a single one-off session to get a feel for what this work is like. We can optimize your home for infant care, brainstorm how the *$%& you're supposed to get enough sleep with this new creature in your life, make a meal plan for the next couple months, or make a pot of tea and take all four hours just to talk about how this is WILD and BEAUTIFUL and BRUTAL and not AT ALL what you were expecting even though you read EVERY BOOK and PLEASE CAN I CRY NOW (yes, yes you can. And then we'll talk about how to make it fun).
Want it? Yeah, you do!
Postpartum support is $50 an hour, and is booked in 16-hour increments.

Birth Consulting/Satellite Doula
My passion is to help birthing people have the support and perspective they need to have fun at their birth, but that service is needed far and wide, not just in NYC! That's where birth consulting and satellite doula work comes in: book a session to discuss all your birth options, including doulas. Everything from the different kinds of care providers you can choose from (OBGYNs are just the start!), to what pain relief options are available to you (everything from epidurals to acupressure!), to your first decisions as new parents (Delayed cord clamping? Circumcision? Who's in charge of that first feeding?) Armed with information, you can be confident in choosing the birth experience that's right for you. Whether you just have a few questions, are looking for resources and recommendations in your area, or want to be guided through the process of crafting a birth plan start to finish, you'll leave these sessions feeling empowered, and excited! If you feel I'm the right fit for you, and you understand the limitations of a satellite doula (I haven't figured out how to offer comforting touch over wifi yet!), I can be on call, and skype in when you're in labor, providing the same real time continuous care as I do locally.
Birth Consulting is $75 an hour, and my birth doula rate is the same for satellite clients.
